Can salt film be removed from glass?
Salt on a pane sits on the surface, and the published soak, clean and squeegee method is written to remove surface dirt. No source read says salt etches glass.

Glossary
A homeowner near the Gulf reaches for the phrase when a window is suspected of carrying salt, even though the window makers themselves use other words.
Definition
Salt film is the everyday name for salt left on a window pane by salt-laden air. No maker or agency read for this site uses the phrase; the PGT, CGI and WinDoor care instructions name salt spray deposits on aluminum frames and list salt among the deposits on screens.
The word
No maker or agency read for this site writes “salt film.” The closest published words come from PGT, CGI and WinDoor, and they are about metal. Their guide says to apply wax to aluminum frames only after the frames are cleaned, because “Otherwise, the wax may seal salt spray deposits to the frames, allowing corrosion to occur.” Its only other salt line lists salt among the deposits on screens. Neither line is about glass.
So salt film is not a maker's term for anything. It is the name a homeowner gives to the same airborne salt when it is suspected on the pane itself, and no source read for this site measures how much of that salt reaches glass. The word for the moving spray, rather than what it leaves, is salt spray, and why glass near the water seems to soil quickly is taken up at why windows get dirty so fast near the beach.
The mechanism
The movement itself is published. UF/IFAS Extension in Escambia County, writing about salt-pruned dune plants, puts it this way: “Specifically, wind-borne salt spray. As waves crash on the shore, salt particles in the air and beach blow inland.” NOAA's Chemical Sciences Laboratory describes the open-ocean side: “When waves break on the open ocean, they throw particles called sea spray aerosols into the atmosphere.” NOAA says those aerosols are made up primarily of salt and calls them “the most abundant natural aerosol in Earth's atmosphere.”
Neither source gives a distance inland or an amount that lands on a window, so this page states the mechanism and stops there. Whether salt film comes off a pane is answered at whether salt film can be removed from glass. The same window guide's glass procedure begins by rinsing with clean water to remove dirt and dust particles that can cause scratches, and it says to avoid a power washer or garden hose; its coastal instructions are set out in what the Gulf coast does to a window.
Two neighboring questions have their own answers: why windows are spotty after a storm, and whether windows can be too dirty to clean.
No maker, glass association or agency read for this page says salt film etches or permanently marks glass, and none measures what wind-borne salt does to a pane over time. The window guide's two salt lines are about aluminum frames and screens, and its corrosion warning is about the frames. This page states the mechanism, salt carried inland on the wind, and no more.
The guide does not say. PGT, CGI and WinDoor print two salt lines, one about wax sealing salt spray deposits to aluminum frames and allowing corrosion, and one listing salt among the deposits on screens, and neither gives a reason or mentions glass. Reading a reason into that silence, that salt is harmless to glass or harmful to it, goes past what the guide says.
