Map of Naples, Marco Island, Estero and Bonita Springs, FL: a marker on each of the four.

Four communities

One number covers all four. Each card says what is true about the place itself, from the sources named under it, and what that means for a roof, a paver drive or a window there.

City of Naples

Roof, paver and window cleaning in Naples.

Naples became a town in 1923 and a city in 1949. Its own coastline runs nearly 9 miles along the Gulf, with Naples Bay, a narrow and shallow estuary, behind it, and the water district's 2013 figure for the surrounding county puts average rainfall near 53 inches a year. That rain and the humidity behind it are what feed the roof algae and paver mildew these services remove.

The city's own code, Sec. 30-68, allows washing exterior home surfaces and roofs at any time with low-volume pressure cleaning equipment, so a soft wash or a paver clean never waits on an irrigation day. The Census counts about four in five occupied homes here as owner-occupied.

City of Marco Island

Roof, paver and window cleaning in Marco Island.

Marco Island is the largest barrier island in the Ten Thousand Islands, on the edge of the Gulf and a short drive from Naples: six miles of beach and over 100 miles of waterways inside 24 square miles, by the city's own count. That is salt water on every side of a roof, a paver drive or a window. The National Weather Service's Tampa Bay office dates the Southwest Florida rainy season May 15 to October 15.

The island's water comes from the city's own Water and Sewer Department, city-owned from 2003 on, and the city's conservation rules allow washing exterior home surfaces and roofs at any time with low-volume pressure equipment, as long as the runoff drains to a pervious surface. It incorporated as a city in 1997, after a first run as Collier City in 1927.

Village of Estero

Roof, paver and window cleaning in Estero.

Estero takes its name from the Spanish for estuary, where the river meets the sea, and until the 1970s much of its settlement and development sat near the Estero River. It became a village at the end of 2014, about 20 miles north of Naples, a 25 to 30 minute drive on I-75 or US-41, and the village counts some 69 communities across roughly 30 square miles, with single-family homes the most common land use.

Water service in the village comes from Bonita Springs Utilities, the member-owned cooperative that also serves Bonita Springs and the unincorporated area around them. The National Weather Service's 1991 to 2020 normal for the area is 57.41 inches of rain a year, and that rain, with the humidity behind it, is what a tile roof and a paver joint grow algae and mildew in.

City of Bonita Springs

Roof, paver and window cleaning in Bonita Springs.

Bonita Springs sits on Florida's Gulf Coast north of Naples, incorporated as a city in 1999 after a first, brief incorporation in the 1920s. Its northern border is shared with Lovers Key State Park, four barrier islands of beach and mangrove; Barefoot Beach Preserve, one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the southwest coast, sits on the county line; and the Imperial River runs through town past Riverside Park.

Water comes from Bonita Springs Utilities, a member-owned cooperative founded in 1970, and the city's Water Conservation Ordinance 21-07 limits lawn irrigation to two days a week while stating plainly that pressure washing is not restricted. The water district's 1991 to 2020 normal for this stretch of coast is 57.58 inches of rain a year, and the salt air comes with the barrier islands.
