Satin finish

A homeowner comparing sealer finishes for a driveway or lanai meets satin on a product label, printed between a glossier name and a flatter one.

Definition

Satin finish is a paver sealer finish label that sits between Gloss and Matte; Techniseal prints all three on its paver protectors, with Satin on its water-based Satin Look Protector. The label is the whole definition, since Techniseal attaches no gloss or sheen measurement to any of the three.

The label

Gloss, Satin and Matte: one maker's three finish words

Techniseal prints three finish words across its paver protector line: Gloss, Satin and Matte. Gloss is the label on its solvent based Wet Look Protector, the darkened, glossy finish the trade calls the wet look. Matte is the label on its penetrating Natural Look Protector (iN), one of the products sold under the name natural look. Satin sits between them, on a Satin Look Protector that the guide says enhances the original color of pavers and forms a protective film.

The guide attaches no gloss unit, percentage or sheen number to any of the three labels. ICPI's Tech Spec 5 describes finishes in words as well, a gloss for acrylics and a flat, no-gloss finish for silanes and siloxanes, without a measurement. Satin is defined by where the maker places it between its other two names, not by a number a reader could carry from one brand's container to another's.

Who decides

Which finish goes on a driveway, and who decides

Which of the three labels ends up on a particular driveway or lanai follows the product used, and that product's own label is where the finish is named. Whether a flat finish is sold at all is answered on whether a matte paver sealer exists, and what any sealer does to a paver, whatever its finish, is set out under what a paver sealer does.

A finish label does not settle how a product goes on, either. How many passes a given sealer takes is its own question, covered on how many coats a paver sealer needs. Gloss, satin or matte for a given surface is a choice made with that product's data sheet in hand, not read off this page.

FAQ

Questions about the term.

More questions are answered one per page in the answers.

Why does a paver sealer's label say Satin instead of a percentage?

Because Techniseal prints Satin as a name, between its Gloss and Matte labels, and publishes no gloss or sheen measurement behind it. ICPI's Tech Spec 5 describes finishes in words too, a gloss for acrylics and a flat, no-gloss finish for silanes and siloxanes, with no number attached. With no shared scale in print, there is no published figure that lines one brand's satin up against another's.

Does a satin sealer form a film or soak into the paver?

Techniseal's Satin Look Protector forms a protective film, its product guide says, as the maker's Gloss Wet Look Protector does; its Matte Natural Look Protector (iN) is the penetrating one. The finish word does not fix the chemistry, though: Techniseal also sells a film-forming NS Natural Look Protector. Whether a given satin product coats the paver or penetrates it is read from that product's own label.

How many coats of sealer do pavers need?

ICPI sets no coat count for a paver sealer; the number runs from one coat to a two-coat system depending on which maker's product is actually on the surface.
