Tumbled paver

The word turns up on a paver sample board, where a walkway that looks weathered on the day it is laid sits beside crisp new units.

Definition

A tumbled paver is a paver whose edges and face are distressed by tumbling, a mechanical surface treatment that Unilock, for its own Brussels Block, describes as tumbling in a drum for an antiqued patina and that ICPI says is often meant to simulate the appearance of stone.

The process

The drum, and the treatments ICPI lists beside it

In the maker's own description, the finish starts in a drum.

Unilock, a paver maker, describes its Brussels Block, a product it says it first introduced to North America in 1993, plainly: the units "are literally ‘tumbled’ in a drum to create an antiqued patina."

The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute's glossary lists tumbling among the surface treatments a manufacturing mold or mechanical means can apply, alongside shot blasting, bush hammering, grinding, polishing, flame treating and washing, and adds that "the purpose of such treatments is often to simulate the appearance of stone." The Brick Industry Association describes the same idea for fired clay pavers: it says "fired pavers can be tumbled to create distressed edges." BIA notes separately that clay paver edges can be square, round, beveled or relieved.

What it changes

Distressed edges change what happens next on the job

Because tumbling distresses the edges, a tumbled unit may have no crisp chamfer, the angled top edge ICPI defines and maker literature also calls a beveled edge. SEK-Surebond's joint sand line gives a tumbled paver surface its own case, and what that changes for joint sand and for sealer on a textured face is covered at are tumbled pavers cleaned differently.

Not every shape is offered both ways. Asked why certain paver and retaining wall block shapes are only available tumbled, Tremron, a Florida paver maker, answers that "certain pavers are not designed to be tumbled." Which finishes a given shape comes in is that maker's catalog question, not a rule the trade applies across product lines.

The word tumbled is not limited to concrete or clay either. Among the travertine finishes the Natural Stone Institute's design manual lists as commonly available, tumbled sits beside polished and honed as "a weathered, aging finish." What that finish means for cleaning stone belongs with marble versus travertine.

FAQ

Questions about the term.

More questions are answered one per page in the answers.

Is a tumbled paver weaker than a smooth one?

Nothing in the documents behind this page ties tumbling to strength. ICPI and the Brick Industry Association describe tumbling as a treatment of the surface and edges, and ICPI's glossary says such treatments are often meant to simulate the appearance of stone. Whether a particular tumbled unit meets a given specification is a question for its maker.

Are all pavers available tumbled?

No. Tremron, a Florida paver maker, says certain pavers are not designed to be tumbled, and its FAQ also addresses why some of its paver and retaining wall block shapes are only available tumbled, so finishes vary shape by shape. Which finishes a given shape comes in is a question for that paver's maker and catalog, not a rule across product lines.
