Can tire marks be removed from pavers?

A driveway shows two kinds of tire mark side by side, one black and flat, one a patch where the surface itself looks different, and they are not the same problem.

Short answer

Yes, when the mark is rubber sitting on the paver. ICPI's remedy for tire skid marks on concrete pavers is to scrub the black area with water, detergent and scouring powder. A mark in the sealer itself, where a tire has discolored the finish, is a sealer problem that ICPI's stain list does not cover.

The split

Black rubber sitting on the paver is not the same as a mark in the sealer

One tire can leave two different kinds of mark, and telling them apart decides what happens next.

ICPI Tech Spec 5 lists tire skid marks among its named stains, with a plain remedy: scrub the black area with water, detergent and scouring powder. That black area is rubber left on the paver surface, and it is a cleaning job.

A patch where the sealed finish itself looks discolored where a tire sat is a different mark: it is in the sealer, not on the paver. ICPI Tech Spec 5 does not name it. Sealer and coating makers call it hot-tire pickup; Techniseal, for one, describes a garage floor finishing coat of its own as providing resistance to hot tire pick-up. Why tires leave marks on sealed pavers covers what causes it.

The scrub

How the rubber itself lifts off a concrete paver

ICPI's entry for skid marks is a scrub, not a spray. Elsewhere in Tech Spec 5, ICPI says the pressure of a high pressure sprayer loosens dirt and pushes water from the surface without the need for scrub brushes, but that is its line for general cleaning; its entry for the black area of a skid mark still names water, detergent and scouring powder.

Oil on the same driveway is a different stain with different remedies, set out at whether paver cleaning removes oil stains. Whether steam cleaning is better than pressure washing for pavers is answered on its own page.

The other mark

When the mark is the sealer, not the rubber

The nearest ICPI line is about a different sealer problem. ICPI says a sealer that has become cloudy, because the base drains poorly, the sealer went onto saturated joint sand or it was applied too thick, must be removed or re-dissolved, with the sealer supplier consulted on treating the situation. ICPI does not tie that line to tires, and it describes sealer work, not a cleaning step; why a paver sealer turns white or cloudy covers those causes. For a mark a tire left in the sealer, the maker of that sealer is the one to ask.

Routine care of a sealed surface is a separate and smaller question, taken up at how to clean sealed pavers between professional cleanings.

The material

Concrete, stone and brick do not share one tire-mark rule

ICPI's scouring-powder scrub is written for concrete pavers. The Natural Stone Institute says scouring powders or creams often contain abrasives that may scratch certain stones, so the same scrub is not assumed safe on a travertine or marble surface.

Clay brick pavements have their own document. The Brick Industry Association says that where tire marks, grease buildup or other stains occur on a brick pavement, frequent sweeping or pressurized water cleaning at low pressure helps reduce the need for more aggressive methods, and that low-pressure water cleaning can be more effective when hot water is used and mild detergents are applied. BIA also puts a psi figure on what it counts as high pressure for brick, and how clay brick and concrete pavers are cleaned differently sets that figure beside the concrete paver lines.

More questions are answered one per page in the answers.

Does a tire mark need a special cleaner, or does detergent work?

ICPI's remedy for tire skid marks on concrete pavers names water, detergent and scouring powder, with no specialty product. Its separate brush line rules out steel bristles, which rust and leave stains of their own, and accepts brass or plastic.

Can pressure alone remove a black tire mark?

None of the documents cited here answers that directly. ICPI says the pressure of a high pressure sprayer loosens dirt and pushes water from the surface without the need for scrub brushes, but its entry for tire skid marks names a scrub with water, detergent and scouring powder. For clay brick pavements, the Brick Industry Association says low-pressure water cleaning can be more effective with hot water and mild detergents.

Will scrubbing a tire mark hurt a sealed driveway?

No document cited here tests ICPI's scouring-powder scrub on a sealed surface. ICPI's skid mark entry is written for concrete pavers, and ICPI's instruction is to follow each product's label, so the sealer's own label is where that answer is found.

Often, but not every time: ICPI says deep set oil stains often need repeated applications, and replacing a few pavers may be an option.
