Dry season

The phrase turns up once the summer storms ease, and again whenever someone in Naples asks when pavers can be sealed or a roof cleaned.

Definition

Dry season is the time of year in some regions of the world when very little rain falls, in Cambridge Dictionary's general sense; for South Florida, NWS Miami, the forecast office for Naples, ends the wet season on October 15, and its study of southeast Florida describes the winter season as having cooler temperatures, lower humidities and less frequent precipitation.

The opposite

Two seasons, and the dry one is named by what it is not

NWS Miami describes southeast Florida as having two predominant seasons, summer and winter: a summer of warm, humid conditions with frequent showers and thunderstorms, and a winter with cooler temperatures, lower humidities and less frequent precipitation. The office includes autumn and spring in the winter season because both transition periods are drier and cooler than summer.

Cambridge Dictionary's general entry names no place. NWS Miami's study rests on Miami International Airport records, so for Naples itself the local numbers are the Naples Municipal Airport normals.

The numbers

Four months under 1.7 inches, and what the normals do not promise

Arithmetic over NOAA's 1991 to 2020 precipitation normals for Naples Municipal Airport puts November, December, January and February each under 1.7 inches, the four lowest of the twelve monthly figures, against 8.89 inches in August and 8.60 in September. The same station's temperature normals put those four months' normal highs between 74.8 F in January and 81.3 F in November, and the lowest normal low in the table, 55.9 F, falls in January.

A monthly normal is a thirty-year average of the rain that fell in that month, not a forecast and not a count of dry days inside it. A month that averages under 1.7 inches can still bring a wet afternoon, so the figure describes the season and never promises a particular dry window; the full twelve-month normals table sets every month side by side.

The sealer's wait

An easier window to find, not a different rule

The paver sealer's condition comes from ICPI's Tech Spec 5, a completely dry surface and a full 24 hours without moisture before most sealers, and from SEK-Surebond, whose TB.6 asks for the same 24 hours and whose TB17 names select Surebond sealers that tolerate a damp surface.

Both documents tie the wait to the surface and to the product, and neither ties it to a month. The dry season makes those 24 hours easier to find than the rainy months do; it does not change the condition. The right month for exterior cleaning in Naples weighs the whole exterior against that calendar, and cleaning a roof in winter takes up the roof on its own. The same wait follows a paver cleaning before its sealing, one of the timing questions in whether all three exterior cleanings can share one visit, and the rainy season is the other half of the calendar.

FAQ

Questions about the term.

More questions are answered one per page in the answers.

Does the dry season have an official start date in Naples?

Yes, as a South Florida date rather than a Naples one. NWS Miami, the local forecast office for Naples, ends the South Florida wet season on October 15, and its weather summary for 2024 called October 15 to December 31 the beginning of the dry season. The office adds that there is often a transition period near the end of the rainy season that can last two weeks or more. Its study of Miami International Airport records put the median end of the summer season at October 17, a median for that airport, not a Naples date.

Do March, April and May count as the dry season?

Mostly. NWS Miami folds spring into southeast Florida's winter season because it is drier and cooler than summer, though its Miami International Airport study put the median start of summer at May 21. In the Naples Municipal Airport normals, March, April and May carry 1.88, 2.52 and 2.76 inches, above every month from November through February and well below every month from June through September.

Answers

Can a roof be cleaned in the winter?

Yes. The Naples winter is the dry season, each month under 1.7 inches of normal rain, but a January averaging 65.3 F does not stop the conditions growth needs.
