Seasonal resident

Around Naples the same person is often called a snowbird, and on an exterior the word points to the months a house spends with its owner away.

Definition

Seasonal resident is a person who lives in a place for only part of the year; snowbird, Cambridge Dictionary's informal American word for one kind, is an older person who lives in a cool place in summer and somewhere warmer in winter.

The word

Snowbird, Cambridge's definition, and the summer a house spends without its owner

Cambridge labels snowbird as American and informal and defines it as an older person who lives in a cool place in summer and somewhere warmer in winter. The entry also prints an example sentence from the Cambridge English Corpus about people who stay only part of the year and come to avoid harsh northern hemisphere winters; that sentence shows how the word is used and is not a Cambridge statement about any place or count.

The two words overlap without matching. Cambridge's snowbird is older and moves with the temperature; seasonal resident names only the part-year pattern. When Naples is the warmer place in that definition, summer is the season the house spends without its owner in residence, and what the summer leaves on a seasonal home before the owners arrive is its own question.

What the weather records do show is the contrast behind the word. NWS Miami describes the southeast Florida summer as warm and humid with frequent showers and thunderstorms, and the winter as cooler, with lower humidities and less frequent precipitation. At Naples Municipal Airport, arithmetic over NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals puts about 65.9 percent of the twelve-month rain total in June through September, inside the rainy season, while November through February each carry under 1.7 inches, in the dry season. The seasons hub sets out all twelve months side by side.

The count

What a housing count measures, and what it does not

No primary source cited here publishes a headcount of seasonal residents. Florida's Office of Economic and Demographic Research does publish the county's 2020 Census counts: 375,752 people and 228,390 housing units, of which 157,921 were occupied and 70,469 vacant.

The profile gives no reason for the vacant figure and does not break it out by seasonal use, second homes, rentals or anything else, so it cannot be read as a count of seasonal homes or seasonal residents.

FAQ

Questions about the term.

More questions are answered one per page in the answers.

Does any source give a number of seasonal residents in Naples?

No. No primary source found publishes that figure. The county's 2020 Census housing count, as Florida's Office of Economic and Demographic Research reports it, shows 70,469 vacant units against 157,921 occupied, but the profile gives no reason for the vacancy and does not break it out as seasonal, second-home or any other use.

Does a seasonal resident have to be older, like a snowbird?

No. Cambridge's snowbird entry specifies an older person who lives in a cool place in summer and somewhere warmer in winter, but seasonal resident, in its plain sense, names only the part-year pattern and carries no age. Cambridge defines snowbird, not seasonal resident, so the age belongs to the informal word alone.
