Two calendars

November in Naples

The forecast office for Naples, NWS Miami, dates the dry season from October 15 in its 2024 summary, while the South Florida Water Management District draws it from November, which makes November the first calendar month inside both definitions.

At a glance

November in Naples, in one paragraph.

NWS Miami's South Florida 2024 Weather Summary dates the dry season from October 15, and the South Florida Water Management District's 2018 report dates it from November, so November is the first calendar month that sits inside both definitions. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give Naples Municipal Airport 1.39 inches of rain, a 72.4 F average, an 81.3 F normal high and a 63.4 F normal low for the month, the first of the four months, November through February, that sit under 1.7 inches. NCEI's provisional count puts 3.9 days with at least 0.01 inch of rain in November, the fewest of the twelve months, against a 1.08 inch median of nonzero monthly totals. The Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center runs from June 1 to November 30, closes at the end of the month, though the Center adds that tropical cyclone activity sometimes falls outside those dates. None of it is a forecast for any single November.

The dry season

Two offices draw the dry season on different dates, and November sits inside both

NWS Miami's South Florida 2024 Weather Summary closes the rainy season's second half at October 15 and opens the dry season on the same date, the date October in Naples turns on. The South Florida Water Management District's 2018 report draws its own dry season from November through May. Read together, November is the first calendar month that sits inside both agencies' dry season definitions; December, January, February and March all sit wholly inside both as well.

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put November's own rain at 1.39 inches, a 72.4 F average, an 81.3 F normal high and a 63.4 F normal low, the first of the four months, November through February, that sit under 1.7 inches in the twelve-month normals table. NCEI's provisional count gives the month 3.9 days with at least 0.01 inch of rain, the fewest of the twelve, against a 1.08 inch median of nonzero monthly totals that sits below the 1.39 inch normal.

NCEI's counts for the airport already register 8.7 November nights at or below 60 F and 1.8 at or below 50 F, and a 0.0 average at or below 40 F. Each figure is a thirty-year average for one station, never a forecast for this particular November.

Dew

NWS Tampa Bay's first shot of cooler, drier air is usually short lived

For its own region, NWS Tampa Bay describes the first arrival of cooler, drier air as usually short lived, a day or two, with the real cool down not usually arriving until November; coastal areas there are slower to cool because the surrounding water keeps temperatures higher.

That pause in the rain does not switch off the moisture a roof's algae runs on, by the two lines that follow. Dew, in the National Weather Service's definition, is moisture condensed on objects whose temperature has fallen below the dew point, and GAF's bulletin on shingle staining says “Dew is the primary moisture source.” By plain reasoning from those two lines, fewer rainy days change how often rain rinses a roof, not whether dew still forms on it; the dew question in a dry month is worked through at why algae grows faster in Naples than up north, and the roof's own winter question sits with can a roof be cleaned in the winter.

Sealing

A 3.9-day month makes the 24 hour sealer window easier to find

November does not move the sealer makers' dryness condition; it changes how often a day can meet it. ICPI Tech Spec 5 states the condition for most sealers in one line: “Allow at least 24 hours without moisture or surface dampness before application.”

What November changes, as a matter of reasoning from NCEI's counts rather than any maker's line, is how often that window turns up. The month's 3.9 provisional days with at least 0.01 inch, against October's 6.4 and September's 15.5, make a dry stretch easier to find without making one certain on any given day, and a day without measurable rain is not by itself a dry surface.

November's normal high and normal low, 81.3 F and 63.4 F, sit inside every maker's window quoted here. SEK-Surebond's TB17 has its sealers applied, typically, with day and night temperatures between 40 F and 95 F and never on a frozen surface; Techniseal's NS sheet requires 50 F to 85 F from the application through the following 24 hours. NCEI still counts 1.8 November nights at or below 50 F, the edge of Techniseal's window, and that count is an airport air reading, not a paver surface. Sealing pavers in a Naples winter sets the rest of the cool season's normal lows against these same windows.

The storm calendar

The Atlantic hurricane season closes on November 30, with its own hedge

November 30 closes a second calendar. In the National Hurricane Center's words, “The official hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is from June 1 to November 30, but tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates, respectively.”

A house that spent the season behind storm panels carries a small mechanical fact once they come down: a panel covers a pane without cleaning it. The National Glass Association's FB01-00 says glass surfaces “should be thoroughly cleaned as dirt and residue appear.” Can windows be cleaned before hurricane shutters go up covers the rest of that sequence.

Owners who left a property closed for the season have a separate question, which what the summer left on a seasonal home before the owners arrive takes up, and the holiday calendar raises how soon before an event windows should be cleaned.

What November is not

A thirty-year average is not a forecast, and November carries no interval

NCEI describes its own 1991 to 2020 figures as a thirty-year average for a uniform period, useful as a ruler for comparing today's weather and as a predictor of conditions in the near future. None of the numbers above is a forecast for this particular November, and none sets a cleaning or sealing interval; what a climate normal is, and is not, is its own term.

The district's water-shortage status is linked, not restated: water shortage phase carries the South Florida Water Management District's own definition and its dated reading, and does a water shortage warning restrict roof cleaning answers what a declared warning means for a wash. When work happens at a given property is a question for that property, not for the calendar.

FAQ

Questions.

More questions are answered one per page in the answers.

Do NWS Miami and the water district start the dry season on the same date?

No. NWS Miami's South Florida 2024 Weather Summary dates the dry season from October 15, and the South Florida Water Management District's 2018 report dates it from November. November is the first calendar month that sits inside both agencies' definitions.

Can a storm still form in November?

Yes. The National Hurricane Center's official season for the Atlantic basin ends November 30, and in the Center's own words “tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after these dates.”

How many rainy days does November normally have in Naples?

NCEI's provisional count gives Naples Municipal Airport 3.9 days with at least 0.01 inch of rain in November, the fewest of any month in the 1991 to 2020 normals. It is a thirty-year average, not a forecast for any single November.

Do windows need cleaning when the storm panels come down?

A panel covers a window without cleaning it, so whatever collected there while it was up is still on the pane once it comes off. The National Glass Association's FB01-00 ties routine cleaning to the appearance of dirt and residue on the glass, not to any date on the calendar.

Can pavers be sealed in winter in Naples?

November through February are Naples' four driest normal months, which makes a 24 hour dry window easier to find, but a cool night is still checked against the label.
