Lanai

Lanai comes up when a homeowner describes the covered floor off the house where the pavers are, and the dictionary's meaning is broader than that one use.

Definition

A lanai is a raised, covered, sometimes partly closed area, often made of wood, on the front or side of a building, in Cambridge Dictionary's American English entry, which lists porch and veranda as synonyms. The entry names no screen and no state; calling a house's covered outdoor room a lanai is trade usage, not the definition.

The word

Raised, covered, sometimes partly closed

Cambridge's entry for lanai stacks its qualifiers before it names a synonym: raised, covered, sometimes partly closed, and often made of wood, on the front or side of a building.

Read one at a time, they are loose. Raised puts the floor above the ground around it. Covered puts a roof over it. Sometimes partly closed allows sides without requiring them, so the word fits a lanai with open sides and one with some sides closed. The synonyms Cambridge gives, porch and veranda, place it in the same family of structure.

The entry says nothing about what is underfoot. A lanai floor is whatever it was built from, and the paver surfaces the company itself names are listed in the pavers section of what 239 Exteriors cleans. Whether pavers under a lanai's roof can take a sealer is a separate question, answered at can pavers under a lanai be sealed.

What the entry does not say

Two things the dictionary never claims

Cambridge's own example sentences for lanai never place the word in Florida and never call it screened.

One example has a household that cannot eat on its lanai during algae blooms; another has a storm leaving tree limbs in the streets and porches and lanais crumpled. Neither names a state, and neither mentions a screen. Using lanai for the covered outdoor room of a house in this area is trade usage, not a dictionary, statutory or code definition.

The word is also silent about pools and floors. A lanai and a pool deck are separate terms, and Cambridge's definition of lanai names no pool. Nor does the word say how a floor was built, whether its pavers are bedded in sand or adhered to concrete in a mortar set build.

FAQ

Questions about the term.

More questions are answered one per page in the answers.

Is a lanai the same thing as a porch?

Close to it. Cambridge Dictionary labels lanai American English, defines it as a raised, covered, sometimes partly closed area, often made of wood, on the front or side of a building, and lists porch and veranda as its synonyms. A synonym is not an exact match, but the entry treats the three words as the same kind of structure.

Does a lanai have to be screened?

Not by definition. Cambridge's entry says a lanai is sometimes partly closed and never mentions a screen, and neither of its two example sentences describes one. Whether a particular lanai has screened sides is a fact about that house, not something the word itself tells you.

Is lanai a Florida word?

Not in the dictionary. Cambridge labels lanai American English, which marks it as a word of American usage, and none of its example sentences names a state. Using it for the covered outdoor room of a house in this area is trade usage, and the definition itself carries no place name.
