The month
September in Naples
September pairs Naples' second-heaviest normal rainfall with the hurricane season's own statistical peak, and what that means for a roof, a paver drive and a window.

Four dates
The National Weather Service office for Naples prints October 15 as the date South Florida's wet season gives way to its dry one, with a transition it says can last two weeks or more. It prints no date on which a roof's own algae stops growing, and the 24-hour dry condition ICPI and SEK-Surebond set ahead of most paver sealers is a matter of the day's weather, not the calendar.
At a glance
October in Naples carries a 1991 to 2020 normal of 3.93 inches of rain and a 78.5 F average at Naples Municipal Airport, down from September's 8.60 inches and 82.4 F. NWS Miami, the Naples zone's own forecast office, and NWS Tampa Bay both publish October 15 as the wet season's end date, each with its own hedge that the date can move. The Atlantic hurricane season runs to November 30, with a sixth hurricane by October 15 and a third major hurricane by October 28 in the National Hurricane Center's average-season table, dates the Center says individual seasons can vary considerably from. None of it is a forecast for this particular October.
October 1
In NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, October at Naples Municipal Airport carries 3.93 inches of rain, a 78.5 F average temperature, an 86.5 F normal high and a 70.5 F normal low, each a thirty-year average, never a forecast for this particular October.
That is a step down from September's own 8.60 inches and 82.4 F average, a fall of 4.67 inches, about 54 percent, and from 89.6 to 86.5 F on the high and 75.1 to 70.5 F on the low. October still ranks above every month from November through May, the fifth-wettest of the twelve in the twelve-month normals table, and about 2.8 times November's 1.39 inches.
The station's daily normals show where the month opens: 0.20 inch of rain month-to-date on October 1, a provisional 38.5 percent probability of at least 0.01 inch on that date, and a daily normal high and low of 88.4 F and 73.6 F. Both fall through the month, the daily normal low first reading below 70 F on October 20 and the daily normal high below 85 F on October 27, smoothed averages crossing round numbers rather than a change in the weather. October 1 also falls in the final third of the Atlantic hurricane season, whose most active stretch the National Hurricane Center puts from mid-August to mid-October.
October 15
Naples sits in the National Weather Service zone whose forecast office is Miami, not Tampa Bay, and NWS Miami's own outlook dates the South Florida wet season May 15 to October 15, the stretch when 60 to 70 percent of the average yearly rainfall occurs, adding that a transition period is often present at either end of the season and can last two weeks or more.
NWS Tampa Bay gives Southwest Florida the same two dates and adds that the season may occur before or after them; the term itself is defined at rainy season, and its counterpart at dry season. NWS Miami's 2024 summary logged the second half of that year's rainy season, August 1 to October 15, and called what followed the start of the dry season.
By NCEI's 1991 to 2020 daily normals for the airport, 2.37 of October's 3.93 inches, roughly 60 percent, has typically fallen by the 15th, an average split rather than a promise about any one October. Whether waiting on that date is worth anything at all belongs to can exterior cleaning wait until after the rainy season.
A day on either side of the 15th still meets a paver sealer's own condition, or misses it: ICPI Tech Spec 5 and SEK-Surebond's TB.6 both put a fully dried surface, with a minimum of 24 hours moisture-free, ahead of most sealers. How paver sealing works and sealing during the rainy season set out what has to be true that day, and what happens if rain hits freshly sealed pavers covers a shower that arrives anyway.
After the fifteenth
After the 15th, NWS Tampa Bay's own note for West Central and Southwest Florida has high humidity, with dew points in the mid 60s to mid 70s, and highs in the mid 80s to lower 90s typically persisting well into October. The same note puts the long-term mean date for the first arrival of cooler, drier air at mid-October for its region, usually lasting only a day or two, with coastal areas slower to cool, and adds: “The real cool down does not usually occur until November.”
The storm calendar keeps running well past the date. NHC's average-season benchmarks put a sixth hurricane by October 15, a seventh by November 15 and a third major hurricane by October 28, basin-wide figures the Center itself warns can vary considerably year to year. In 2024, NWS Miami's summary recorded Hurricane Milton's landfall near Siesta Key on October 9 and a 5.08-foot maximum tide above Mean Higher High Water in Naples Bay, the highest measurement there since Hurricane Ian in 2022.
None of those dates switches off a roof's growth conditions: GAF names dew as blue-green algae's primary moisture source, ARMA ties growth to warm, humid conditions and to moisture that dwells on a roof, and Tampa Bay's note has that humidity persisting well into October. A streak visible after the 15th has, by ARMA's account, likely been building for several months or longer; the time of year for roof cleaning in Naples reads the rest of that calendar against the makers' own words.
For glass, the National Glass Association's routine-maintenance instruction is to clean exterior glass as dirt and residue appear. What wind-borne salt spray and a storm's own rain leave on a pane, and where a cleaning's job ends, is taken up at windows spotty after a storm.
Whether a tile or shingle held up is not a cleaning question: Eagle Roofing Products, for its own tile, routes an inspection to the original roofing contractor or another qualified licensed roofing contractor, and Florida's Department of Financial Services asks a storm-affected homeowner to photograph the damage for the company adjuster. Should a roof be cleaned before hurricane season, can a roof be cleaned after a hurricane and can exterior cleaning remove storm debris stains set out the rest, and what the summer left on a seasonal home before the owners arrive covers a house left empty all summer.
The limits
A normal is a thirty-year average, and it describes the month, not any single October. NCEI's own quartiles for the airport put the middle half of October's nonzero monthly totals, 1991 to 2020, between 1.25 and 4.84 inches, around the 3.93-inch normal.
The South Florida Water Management District keeps a different convention: its 2018 report puts the region's dry season November through May and wet season June through October, and its 2026 report places October in “the late wet season,” where both forecast offices already close the season on the 15th. NCEI's provisional October count, 6.4 days with at least 0.01 inch, counts days with measurable rain, not dry surfaces: a day under that threshold can still leave dew, which the National Weather Service defines as moisture condensed on objects near the ground.
October also sits inside whatever water-shortage status the district has posted, never restated here: water shortage phase and does a water shortage warning restrict roof cleaning carry the terms, a dated reading and the district's own link. Which month suits all three surfaces at once is weighed at the right month for exterior cleaning in Naples.
No. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put October's rain at 3.93 inches at Naples Municipal Airport, above every month from November through May and below only June through September. NCEI's provisional normal still counts 6.4 days with measurable rain, and the South Florida Water Management District's own reports count all of October inside the wet season.
No. By the National Hurricane Center's definition the season runs from June 1 through November 30, and NHC's average-season table has a sixth hurricane by October 15 and a third major hurricane by October 28, dates NHC says individual seasons can vary considerably from. The window NHC gives for most of the season's activity, mid-August to mid-October, closes inside the month, but the season itself runs more than six weeks past it.
Not by the calendar. ICPI Tech Spec 5 and SEK-Surebond attach the sealer's condition to the surface and the day: the cleaned surface fully dry, and a minimum of 24 hours without moisture on it, ahead of most sealers, met or missed on the day itself. NCEI's provisional 1991 to 2020 day counts for Naples Municipal Airport fall from 15.5 days with measurable rain in September to 6.4 in October, which by that arithmetic makes such a window easier to find without promising one on any particular day.
